Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created by the Smithsonian Institute to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz - to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.
To help you celebrate, we have created a brand new course titled "Intro to Jazz". In this course, students will explore the cultural, historical, and musical background of American Blues and Jazz, as well as various cultural connections, how music reflects social and cultural awareness, and technological developments that impacted the evolution of jazz music.

This year, Jazz Appreciation Month will have a special focus on celebrating the special relationship between jazz and social justice. We have an additional lesson highlighting this relationship: "Duke Ellington & Social Justice", authored by Dan Schultz. You may find this lesson, along with the Intro to Jazz course, in your MusicFirst Classroom Library.
